
Disasters for January 2025
For the month of January 2025, a total of 205 disasters or an average of seven disasters per day were reported in the ASEAN region. The number of reported occurrences was 1.5x more than the number of reported disasters in January of last year and 2.1x more than the five-year average (2020-2024) for January. The ASEAN Member States affected by these events were Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, and Thailand. Consistently, the highest number of reported events occurred in Indonesia with 183 significant disasters recorded. This indicated that 89.27% of all significant disasters recorded in the ASEAN region for the period of January 2025 occurred in Indonesia. This was followed by the Philippines (6.34%), Thailand (2.93%), Malaysia (0.98%), and Myanmar (0.49%). A notable spike in disaster occurrences was observed in the third week of January 2025 which accounted for 36.6% of all the reported disaster events for this reporting period.
For the assessment of impacts, Indonesia and the Philippines recorded the highest numbers of affected population in the ASEAN region for the month of January 2025. Indonesia, with 979.9K people or 51.9%, while the Philippines, with 890.2K people, accounted for 47.2% of the disaster affected population. This indicates that the average number of affected populations per disaster occurrence in the two most affected countries correspond to 5.3K in Indonesia and 89K in the Philippines. Overall, for the month of January 2025, the recorded significant disasters had an average of 9.20K affected individuals per disaster occurrence, which was 2.3x more than the five-year average (2020-2024). These reported significant disasters affected 271 per 100,000 people* in the ASEAN Region. Meanwhile, about 3 per 100,000 people* in the region have been displaced.
