PHNOM PENH, 21 JUNE 2024. 17 ASEAN Emergency Response and Assessment Team (ASEAN-ERAT) Members from ASEAN Member States, ASEAN Secretariat, and AHA Centre completed the Level 2 Course on Humanitarian Logistics held on 17-21 June 2024 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The course was opened by the Secretary General of National Centre for Disaster Management (NCDM) Cambodia H.E. Kim Virak and Deputy Executive Director of the AHA Centre Mr. Krishna Putra Tanaja.
During the classroom sessions, course participants learned about international systems and applications of logistics in humanitarian operations, through sessions facilitated by ASEAN-ERAT Humanitarian Logistic Specialists and experts from AHA Centre partners including the World Food Programme (WFP), the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), and the United Nations Humanitarian Response Depot (UNHRD). Participants also completed a simulation exercise designed based on real-life events and previous ASEAN-ERAT deployments.
In his opening remarks, Mr. Tanaja highlighted the importance of the ASEAN-ERAT as a crucial mechanism and tool for disaster preparedness and emergency response under the ASEAN Agreement on Disaster Management and Emergency Response (AADMER). “The ASEAN Committee for Disaster Management (ACDM) is committed to continue equipping and enhancing the ASEAN-ERAT Members, by providing training for more advanced technical skills that may be required during deployment,” he added.
These 17 ASEAN-ERAT members are now deployable as humanitarian logistics specialists, capable of facilitating humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations within the ASEAN region.
The ASEAN-ERAT Level 2 Course on Humanitarian Logistics is supported by the Government of Japan through the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF).
