
REGIONAL SUMMARY:
During the thirty-third week of 2025, the ASEAN region recorded 27 disaster events, including storms, floods, landslides, drought, earthquake, and wind-related incidents affecting Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, and Viet Nam. In Indonesia, the Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana (BNPB) reported these events across West Java, Maluku, Bengkulu, Central Java, North Sulawesi, Jambi, Banten, North Sumatra, Central Sulawesi, West Kalimantan, East Java, and North Maluku. In the Philippines, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported floods and landslides in Rizal and Cebu provinces. In Thailand, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) reported floods in Lampang, Mae Hong Son, Nan, Phrae, Phetchabun, Chanthaburi, Trat, Lopburi, Chiang Rai, and Sa Kaeo. Lastly, in Viet Nam, the Viet Nam Disaster and Dyke Management Authority (VDDMA) reported storms and wind-related impacts in Lao Cai.
HIGHLIGHT:
In Indonesia, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake (corrected from M6.0) struck Poso District, Central Sulawesi, on 17 August, affecting several villages in Poso Pesisir Sub-district. According to the BNPB, impacts include 2 fatalities, 44 injured, and 433 affected persons (184 families). At least 89 people are displaced as data collection continues. Damage assessments indicate 194 houses affected (70 totally damaged, 124 partially damaged) along with 3 schools, 1 health facility, and 1 government office. BNPB and BPBD Poso continue rapid assessments and coordination with local authorities to address urgent needs, including shelter, food, medical supplies, and operational support. Field teams remain on the ground to verify figures and support affected communities.
HYDRO-METEO-CLIMATOLOGICAL:
For the past week, data from the ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre (ASMC) indicated high 7-day average rainfall concentrated across Cambodia, Indonesia (Sumatra, Kalimantan, Papua, West Java, Maluku), Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, and Viet Nam. Tropical Depression Seventeen contributed to the high concentration of rainfall over Northern Viet Nam and Lao PDR. Additionally, Tropical Depression Eighteen and INVEST 90W are being monitored over the West Pacific Ocean. (PAGASA, NCHMF, JTWC).
GEOPHYSICAL:
Ten (10) significant earthquakes (M>5.0) were recorded by Indonesia’s Badan Meteorologi, Klimatologi, dan Geofisika (BMKG) and the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS). Mount Sinabung (alert level II), Dempo (alert level II), Marapi (alert level II), Anak Krakatau (alert level II), Slamet (alert level II), Merapi (alert level III), Semeru (alert level II), Bromo (alert level II), Raung (alert level II), Lewotobi Laki-Laki (alert level IV), Ili Lewotolok (alert level III), Gamalama (alert leve II), Ibu (alert level II), Dukono (alert level II), Soputan (alert level II), Lokon (alert level II), Ruang (alert level II), Awu (alert level II), Sorikmarapi (alert level I), Tandikat (alert level I), Tangkuban Parahu (alert level I), Sangeangapi (alert level I), Sirung (alert level I) in Indonesia, and Kanlaon (alert level 2), Taal (alert level 1), Mayon (alert level 1), and Bulusan (alert level 1) volcanoes in the Philippines reported recent volcanic activity according to Pusat Vulkanologi dan Mitigasi Bencana Geologi (PVMBG) and PHIVOLCS.
OUTLOOK:
According to the ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre (ASMC), for the coming week, drier conditions and warmer than usual temperatures are predicted over are predicted over parts of the western Maritime Continent. Wetter conditions and cooler than usual temperatures are predicted over parts of the southern and eastern Maritime Continent. A moderate increase in chance of very heavy rainfall is predicted over Java Island and parts of southern Sumatra. There is also a small increase in chance of very heavy rainfall predicted over the Maluku Islands and northern Sulawesi. ENSO neutral conditions are present.
