
REGIONAL SUMMARY:
During the twenty-ninth week of 2025, the ASEAN region experienced 20 disaster events, including earthquakes, tropical cyclone, floods, landslides, storms, and wind-related incidents, affecting several Member States—namely Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Viet Nam. In Indonesia, Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana (BNPB) reported that several provinces were impacted, including Central Sulawesi, North Maluku, Southwest Papua, and East Java. In the Philippines, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) recorded the impacts of tropical cyclone, storms, flooding, landslides, and strong winds in 17 Regions. In Thailand, Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) reported flooding, storms, and strong winds in Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Chanthaburi, Nan, Lampang, Phetchabun, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Krabi, and Surat Thani. Finally, in Viet Nam, the Viet Nam Disaster and Dyke Management Authority (VDDMA) reported storms and strong winds in Northern Region.
HIGHLIGHT:
In the Philippines, the combined effects of Tropical Cyclone WIPHA and the enhanced Southwest Monsoon resulted to widespread impacts across 17 Regions. According to the NDRRMC Situation Report No. 9 dated 21 July at 0500H UTC+7, these disasters affected a total of 853.4K people (238.3K families). Displaced population reached a cumulative total of 269.7K. As of the date of the report, about 100K remained displaced, of which 70.7K individuals were being served in 318 evacuation centres. Casualties included five deaths, five injuries, and seven missing individuals. Reported damages include 1.25K houses damaged (299 totally damaged) and 44 units of infrastructure for a combined estimate of about 2.86M USD. NDRRMC Operations Center maintains its status as RED Alert as authorities conduct emergency response operations, assessments, and provision of assistance to affected communities.
HYDRO-METEO-CLIMATOLOGICAL:
For the past week, data from the ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre (ASMC) indicated medium to high 7-day average rainfall across the ASEAN Region, including Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, northwestern and eastern coast of Sumatra Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Viet Nam. Tropical Cyclone WIPHA is currently being monitored as it moves towards Northern Viet Nam. Additionally, two tropical disturbances (INVEST 97W and 98W) are being monitored over the West Pacific Ocean. INVEST 97W which was located about 950km east northeast of Eastern Visayas has a MEDIUM likelihood of development into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours (PAGASA).
GEOPHYSICAL:
Fourteen (14) significant earthquakes (M>5.0) were recorded by Indonesia’s Badan Meteorologi, Klimatologi, dan Geofisika (BMKG), Myanmar’s Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH), the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), and Thai Meteorological Department (TMD). Mount Marapi (alert level II), Semeru (alert level II), Karangetang (alert level II), Ibu (alert level II), and Dukono (alert level II) in Indonesia, and Kanlaon (alert level 3), Taal (alert level 1), Mayon (alert level 1), and Bulusan (alert level 1) volcanoes in the Philippines reported recent volcanic activity according to Pusat Vulkanologi dan Mitigasi Bencana Geologi (PVMBG) and the PHIVOLCS.
OUTLOOK:
According to the ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre (ASMC), for the coming week, drier conditions are predicted over much of the Maritime Continent and parts of southeastern Mainland Southeast Asia. Wetter conditions are predicted over much of the rest of Mainland Southeast Asia and the very northeastern part of the Maritime Continent.. There is a moderate increase in chance of very heavy rainfall is predicted over eastern Myanmar, northern Lao PDR, northern Viet Nam and the Nusa Tenggara islands. There is also a small increase in chance of very heavy rainfall predicted over most of the northern parts of Mainland Southeast Asia (in particular, parts of Myanmar, rest of Lao PDR, northern Thailand). ENSO neutral conditions are present.
