
REGIONAL SUMMARY:
In the seventeenth week of 2025, the ASEAN region experienced a total of 41 disaster events, including floods, storms, and wind-related disasters, affecting Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Viet Nam. According to Indonesia’s Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana (BNPB), these events impacted multiple provinces, namely Bangka Belitung, Banten, Jambi, West Java, Central Java, East Kalimantan, Lampung, North Maluku, West Nusa Tenggara, South Sulawesi, Central Sulawesi, and North Sumatra. In Malaysia, the Agensi Pengurusan Bencana Negara (NADMA) reported flooding in Selangor. Meanwhile, in Thailand, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) recorded storms and wind-related incidents affecting several provinces across the Northern and Central regions, as well as flooding in Pattani. In Viet Nam, the Viet Nam Disaster and Dyke Management Authority (VDDMA) reported storms and wind-related disasters across Ha Giang, Nghe An, Quang Binh, Thua Thien Hue, Quang Ngai, Quang Tri, and Quang Nam.
HIGHLIGHT:
In the seventeenth week of 2025, flooding and wind-related disasters were reported across Lampung Province, affecting the areas of Lampung Selatan, Pesawaran, Bandar Lampung, and Tulang Bawang, as documented by BNPB. According to the reports, these events resulted in the loss of three lives and impacted approximately 3K families (13K individuals). The damages reported include around 3K houses, along with bridges and roads. In response, relevant government agencies have undertaken necessary measures to address the situation and provide support to the affected communities.
Additionally, updated impact information on the M7.7 Mandalay Earthquake in Myanmar, based on DDM Myanmar report as of 28 April at 18:30 hrs utc+7, indicates that a total of 3,769 fatalities have been recorded, with 107 individuals missing and 5,106 others injured. Approximately 499K people have been affected, including 47K displaced persons currently residing in 130 evacuation centres, and 272K individuals who have sought shelter with relatives. Reported damages include the approximately 13K houses (totally damaged) and over 41K houses (partially damaged), 2,637 schools, 370 hospitals, 5,697 offices and other buildings, as well as over 100 bridges and 409 roads. The estimated economic losses are approximately USD 1.8 billion. Data collection and validation are ongoing.
HYDRO-METEO-CLIMATOLOGICAL:
For the past week, data from the ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre (ASMC) indicated medium to high 7-day average rainfall across Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Lower Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, and Viet Nam. As of this reporting, there is no active tropical cyclone being monitored in the ASEAN region (JTWC).
GEOPHYSICAL:
Eight (8) significant earthquakes (M>5.0) were recorded by Indonesia’s Badan Meteorologi, Klimatologi, dan Geofisika (BMKG) and the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS). Mount Ibu (alert level III), Dukono (alert level II), Lewotobi Laki-laki (alert level III), Semeru (alert level II), and Marapi (alert level II) in Indonesia, and Kanlaon (alert level 3), Taal (alert level 1), Mayon (alert level 1), and Bulusan (alert level 1) volcanoes in the Philippines reported recent volcanic activity according to Pusat Vulkanologi dan Mitigasi Bencana Geologi (PVMBG) and PHIVOLCS.
OUTLOOK:
According to the ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre (ASMC), for the coming week, wetter conditions are predicted over parts of the northeastern Maritime Continent and over most of Mainland Southeast Asia. While drier conditions are predicted over much of the central Maritime Continent. For the regional assessment of extreme weather events, there is a small increase in chance of very heavy rainfall occurring in the Parts of central Mainland Southeast Asia and parts of the northeastern Maritime Continent. Furthermore, there is a low chance of extreme heat conditions to occurs. . La Niña conditions are now present. Based on the ASEANCOF-24 consensus outlook, ENSO neutral conditions are now present. However, the La Niña conditions earlier in the year may still have a moderating effect on temperatures in Southeast Asia.
