
REGIONAL SUMMARY:
During the twenty-fourth week of 2026, a total of 19 disaster events were reported across the ASEAN region, including droughts, earthquakes, floods, landslides, storms, tsunamis, and wind-related disasters in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Viet Nam. In Indonesia, Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana (BNPB) reported disaster events in West Java, Central Java, Riau Islands, Central Sulawesi, North Sulawesi, West Sumatra, and North Sumatra. In Malaysia, Agensi Pengurusan Bencana Negara (NADMA) reported flooding in Perak. In the Philippines, National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) and Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) reported M7.8 earthquake which also triggered tsunamis in Mindanao, as well as the impacts of easterlies over the Zamboanga Peninsula. Meanwhile, in Thailand, Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) reported flooding in Krabi, Phang Nga, and Trang. Lastly, in Viet Nam, Viet Nam Disaster and Dyke Management Authority (VDDMA) reported storms, strong winds, flooding, and landslides in Lai Chau, Lao Cai, and An Giang.
HIGHLIGHT:
In the Philippines, according to PHIVOLCS, M7.8 earthquake that occurred in Sarangani on 8 June 2026 at 0637H UTC+7 was tectonic in origin and was attributed to subduction along the Cotabato Trench, a major earthquake-generating structure located offshore. PHIVOLCS recorded the highest instrumental intensity of VII (PEIS) in General Santos City, Philippines. The earthquake also generated tsunamis that affected both the Philippines and Indonesia. PHIVOLCS reported tsunami observations in six locations, with the highest wave height of 1.48 m recorded in Kiamba, Sarangani, Philippines. The tsunami warning was lifted by PHIVOLCS at 1419H UTC+7. In Indonesia, BMKG reported tsunami waves of up to 0.75 m in North Sulawesi and lifted the tsunami warning at 1015H UTC+7.
As of 15 June at 0200H UTC+7, PHIVOLCS had recorded more than 5.9K aftershocks. According to NDRRMC, as of 15 June at 0700H UTC+7, earthquake, tsunami, and associated landslides had resulted in 65 fatalities, 1.4K injuries, and 36 missing persons, affecting approximately 176.2K families (736.4K persons) across Regions IX, XI, XII, and BARMM. Of the affected population, around 3.2K families (14.2K persons) were accommodated in 37 evacuation centres (ECs), while 14.7K families (59K persons) were receiving assistance outside ECs. Reported damages include approximately 57.3K houses (47.2K partially damaged and 10K totally damaged), as well as 41 bridges and 135 road sections. As of the reporting period, infrastructure damage was estimated at approximately USD 2.34M. The AHA Centre continues to coordinate closely with the NDRRMC-OCD, and remains ready to provide assistance should the need arise.
HYDRO-METEO-CLIMATOLOGICAL:
For the past week, data from the ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre (ASMC) indicated medium to high seven-day average rainfall across Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, the Philippines, Timor-Leste, Thailand, and Viet Nam. During the reporting period, Tropical Disturbance INVEST 92W, located over the western Pacific Ocean, was forecast to track west-northwestward and was considered less likely to make landfall over the ASEAN region (JTWC).
GEOPHYSICAL:
Thirty-nine (39) significant earthquakes (M?5.0) were recorded by Indonesia’s Badan Meteorologi, Klimatologi, dan Geofisika (BMKG) and the Philippines Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS). Mount Marapi (alert II), Dempo (alert level II), Semeru (alert level III), Lewotobi Laki-laki (alert level III), and Ibu (alert level II) in Indonesia, and Taal (alert level 1), Mayon (alert level 3), Bulusan (alert level 1), and Kanlaon (alert level 2) volcanoes in the Philippines reported recent volcanic activity according to Pusat Vulkanologi dan Mitigasi Bencana Geologi (PVMBG) and PHIVOLCS.
OUTLOOK:
According to the ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre (ASMC), for the coming week, drier conditions are expected across the southern Maritime Continent and much of the central and eastern equatorial region, while warmer-than-usual temperatures are forecast over eastern Mainland Southeast Asia and parts of the northeastern Maritime Continent. For assessment of extreme, there is a small increase in chance of extreme rainfall over parts of the western Maritime Continent. Meanwhile, a moderate increase in chance of extreme hot conditions is forecast over Java Island, while a small increase in chance is expected over southern Sumatra, northern Viet Nam, and the northern Philippines. A transition to El Nino conditions is predicted in June-July 2026.
