REGIONAL SUMMARY:
For the twenty-fourth week of 2023, a total of 11 disasters (floods, landslides, storms, winds, drought, and earthquake) affected the region. Indonesia has reportedly been affected. Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana (BNPB) of Indonesia reported floods and landslides in North Sulawesi, Maluku, and West Kalimantan; winds in Central Java and North Sumatra; and drought in Central Java. The Philippines’ National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported that heavy rains brought by localised thunderstorms caused flooding, storms, and winds in Sultan Kudarat (Region XII) and Davao City (Region XI) of the Philippines. Meanwhile, on 15 June 2023, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported M6.3 Earthquake in Calatagan (Batangas).
HIGHLIGHT:
According to PHIVOLCS, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 at a depth of 107 km occurred on 15 June at 0919 HRS UTC+7, 13 km S 66o W of Calatagan, Batangas (CALABAZON), Philippines. As of 16 June, the NDRRMC reported that the M6.3 earthquake in Calatagan (Batangas) has impacted Batangas, Quezon, Cavite, Laguna, and Rizal Provinces. According to the report, a total of 9 houses, 1 bridge, 8 educational facilities, 1 health facility, 1 worship place, and 70 government offices / other public facilities were repotedly damaged.
Meanwhile, in Indonesia, according to BNPB, drought have been reported in Cilacap (Central Java). Based on the report, around 7.5K persons (2.5K families) were affected. As of the report on 19 June 2023, BNPB also reported drought since months ago in Central Java, particularly in Cilacap, Banyumas, Purbalingga, Banjarnegara, Kebumen, Purworejo, Wonosobo, Magelang, Boyolali, Klaten, Sukoharjo, Wonogiri, Karanganyar, Sragen, Grobogan, Blora, Rembang, Pati, Kudus, Jepara, Demak, Semarang, Temanggung, Kendal, Batang, Pekalongan, Pemalang, Tegal, Brebes, Magelang City, Surakarta City, Salatiga City, Semarang City, Pekalongan City, and Tegal City. Local disaster management authorities (BPBD) has distributed 349,000 litres of clean water to the affected community and around 41,691,000 litres of available clean water remain and ready to be distributed. Data collection is also ongoing by relevant authorities.
HYDRO-METEO-CLIMATOLOGICAL:
For the past week, data from the ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre (ASMC) showed medium to high 7-day average rainfall spreading across central parts of Kalimantan, southeastern parts of Sulawesi, Maluku, and Papua in Indonesia; southern parts of Myanmar; eastern parts of Luzon in the Philippines; and northern parts of Viet Nam. As of reporting, there are no active tropical cyclone advisories for the region (JTWC).
GEOPHYSICAL:
Three (3) significant earthquakes (M>5.0) were recorded by Indonesia’s Badan Meteorologi, Klimatologi, dan Geofisika (BMKG) and PHIVOLCS. Mount Semeru (alert level II), Anak Krakatau (alert level III), Ili Lewotolok (alert level II), and Ibu (alert level III) in Indonesia, and Mayon Volcano (alert level 3), Taal (alert level 1), and Kanlaon (alert level 1) in the Philippines reported recent volcanic activity according to Pusat Vulkanologi dan Mitigasi Bencana Geologi (PVMBG) and PHIVOLCS.
OUTLOOK:
According to the ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre (ASMC), for the coming week, wetter conditions are expected over northwest Mainland Southeast Asia; drier conditions are expected over most of the Maritime Continent and parts of southern Mainland Southeast Asia; and warmer than usual temperature is expected over much of the Maritime Continent and southern Mainland Southeast Asia. For the regional assessment of extremes, there is a small increase in chance for a very heavy rainfall event to occur in Parts of central and northern Myanmar; and moderate increase in chance in Peninsular Malaysia and northern Sumatra, and small increase in chance in Southern Thailand, Cambodia, southern Viet Nam, coastal parts of Viet Nam, coastal parts of Borneo, Java, and northern Papua for extreme hot conditions to occur in the parts of the western Maritime Continent.
